Objective

The railway connects copper mines in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the port of Lobito in Angola but also serves as the foundation to wider (now) US led development efforts.

Description

The Lobito Atlantic Railway is a railway service on the historic Benguela railway line (within Angola only) between Lobito and the border town of Luau. It has since become a high profile infrastructure investment by the USA and the EU and framed as a counter to the Chinese driven BRI. It is the first phase of the Lobito Trans-Africa Corridor and is the backbone on which additional high-quality investments in agriculture, healthcare, energy, and financial services will be built

History

On July 4, 2023, the Lobito Atlantic Railway company secured a 30-year concession. Towards the end of 2023, the governments of the United States of America and the European Union, took significant measures to support the advancement of the Lobito Corridor
