Objective

When the CANAMEX Corridor was first approved, two bottlenecks were identified with the Arizona portion of the corridor that required significant infrastructure to address. The first was the route of U.S. Route 93 across northwestern Arizona, which then included a slow route with numerous hairpin curves over the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam Bypass opened on October 19, 2010, resolving that issue.

Description

The Hoover Dam Bypass, featuring the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, was completed in October 2010 to alleviate severe traffic congestion on U.S. Route 93. Spanning 1,900 feet over the Colorado River downstream from the Hoover Dam, the $240 million project connects Nevada and Arizona. The centerpiece, a 1,060-foot twin-rib concrete arch bridge, rises roughly 900 feet above the river, making it the highest concrete arch bridge in the world. This construction replaced the dangerous, narrow road across the top of the dam with a four-lane highway, improving safety and reducing travel times. The project, featuring a 3.5-mile corridor, serves as a crucial infrastructure link between Arizona and Nevada.
