“This mega project is one of the TNPA KZN Logistic Hub’s initiatives of positioning the Port of Durban as an international container hub, by growing its container volume capacity from 2.9 million TEUs to 11.4 million TEUs as per the Transnet Segment Strategy,” TNPA said
Description
The existing quay wall will be deepened from -12.8m to -16.5m Chart Datum Port (CDP) and lengthened from 914m to approximately 1 210m which will allow for the simultaneous berthing of three 350m long Post Panamax Vessels. When this is completed, a proposed expansion of the terminal’s capacity will proceed. ICTSI was awarded the privatisation tender by Transnet for DCT Pier 2 for a 25-year partnership, whereby the Philippines concessionaire would acquire 49% of the terminal. DCT Pier 2 handles approximately 65% of South Africa’s total containerised cargo and is the main link to the country’s economic and industrial hinterland in Gauteng.
