Description

The Dawei deep-sea port and special economic zone is an infrastructure project in Myanmar. It aims to transform Dawei into Myanmar's and Southeast Asia's largest industrial and trade zone. Construction started, but was suspended in 2013. Plans to resume construction were announced in August 2015. The project, as stipulated by The Dawei Special Economic Zone Law, aims to construct many differentiated zones.

History

Thailand and Myanmar (specifically, between Myanma Port Authority and Italian-Thai Development Public Co., Ltd. (ITD)) signed an MOU to develop the Dawei Special Economic Zone in 2008. ITD could not find the funds needed to implement the Dawei Special Economic Zone Project in time. The agreement signed between Myanma Port Authority and ITD in 2013 was terminated. Another MOU which includes Myanmar, Thailand and Japan was officially signed at the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit on 4th July 2015.
